Beyond the Surface
By Traci Neal
A substance takes me to outer space, another world,
a new galaxy. It is vast, a volume that cannot be
contained. Reaches the stars, asteroids, comets.
Travels to the unknown, the unseen. It has complex
theories. Science tries to explain the formula it forms.
Poetry is abstract, a rocketship full of abilities.
Countdown for blast off. Read the words on
various airwaves, planets. Breathe its language
as a stabilizer. Feel weightless by the wonder it
gives. Move by having no barriers. Might seem
strange, occasionally, when what is said or done
in the solar system of society’s preferences stays
cold, but poetry matches with an intelligence
beyond Earth, beyond the surface.
Discovery comes to the explorer.
Experience going the distance.
